The last couple of pandemic years & now the aftermath & geopolitical changes being witnessed has made businesses around the world unpredictable. But this is one side of things, another is the speed of emergence of new opportunities specially for growing economies like our Country.
In this the Mining, Minerals & Metal Industry is no exception. Digital transformation was being already applied in bits & pieces by the industry, but the present environment has now made it a matter of long-term survival.
The efficiency and growth of the mining industry is essential for the overall industrial development of our country. No one associated with the industry today doubts that the future of MMM is in going digital. Mines and metal extraction must become more efficient, agile and future-facing — ready for the new technologies that will continue to transform the sector for decades to come.
A paper titled Digital Transformation Initiative Mining and Metals Industry, released by World Economic Forum (2017) points out the opportunities that Digitalization in MMM will allow. They are:
- For the overall industry, customers, society, and environment It will unlock more than $425 billion of value for the over the next 10 years (to 2025). This equates to 3-4% of industry revenue during the same period.
- Create improvement in safety, with around 1,000 lives saved and avoid 44,000 injuries. This means approximately 10% decrease in lives lost and a 20% decrease in injuries in the industry.
- A reduction of 610 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, with an estimated value to society and environment of $30 billion.
- For the MMM industry, more than $320 billion of value over the next decade, with a potential benefit of approximately $190 billion for the mining sector and $130 billion for the metals sector. This is equivalent to 2.7% of the industry revenue and 9% of its profit.
