According to a study by Baymard Institute, the average cart abandonment rate for online retailers is 69.57%, with the respondents citing unexpected shipping costs (55%), being forced to create an account (34%), and long/complicated checkout processes (26%) as top reasons behind it.
The above figures highlight D2C brands’ challenges regarding lost sales and the importance of providing a seamless and convenient customer experience from product discovery to order completion.
Research also suggests that 45.3% of abandoned cart emails are opened, and 21.1% of those who open abandoned cart emails end up making a purchase. This further implies the brighter prospects of other frequently used channels such as voice, SMS, live chat, and WhatsApp. However, these have been primarily under-utilized, with very few enterprises getting the automation right and optimizing these channels.
